If the album has “pleasure” in the title, then we can be sure that while listening, the world of soothing, optimistic and sensual sounds will open before us. – I always want to take a step forward. That’s why I’m working intensively on being here and now – Jessie Ware tells us about her new album “What’s Your Pleasure?”.
I saw her on stage for the first time in the winter of 2015. On a cozy Warsaw Torwar, a small figure in black could softly build a cozy atmosphere. Jessie Ware then sang the biggest hits from the debut album “Devotion” from 2012 – “Wildest Moments”, “110%” and “Running”, as well as new songs from the “Tough Love” released at the end of 2014. Her first industry album, Pitchfork, considered one of the top 100 in a decade. The Englishwoman appeared as a phenomenal combination of pop and solo. She was also dazzling with her beauty – jet black hair, often tied up in a bun, strongly emphasized eyebrows, cat lines. The sound and aesthetics clearly referred to the nostalgic retro style.
Five years after that concert, I talk to Jessie on Zoom. I see a girl that is thoroughly modern. Equally dazzling, but closer to a friend whose jealousy of self-confidence than a diva, charming the audience with a microphone in her hand. It’s 10am in London, but Jessie has finished her morning coffee long ago. As a mother of two small children – a four-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son – she gets up much earlier.
Her long hair is loose, but on the eyelids I see characteristic lines, and in my ears – the inseparable earrings of the circle. Instead of stage black he has a pink sweatshirt. And he looks definitely younger than during the concert, although she was shortly in her thirties at the time and now she is 35. “It’s a mature age for a woman in show business,” Jessie laughs, adding that he absolutely doesn’t agree with such a classification. – When you appear on stage as a 20-year-old, everyone treats you a bit like a new toy – shiny and fascinating. Then you have to try more and more to keep your fans interested – he explains.
That’s why the new album “What’s your pleasure?” Ware decided to make a refund. Maybe not 180 degrees, because, as he admits, there are still retro notes in the songs, in particular of the 70s, but from the warm melancholy of ballads about love it has gone into hot, disco rhythms. When promoting the album, he says that she would like people to love her. And if they don’t shed their clothes, at least let them dance. – My kids love these new songs. The previous ones were probably too slow for them. Now they are dancing all the time – laughs Ware, who spent time of forced isolation with her husband, a childhood friend, Sam Burrows. They took care of children alternately.
